Believe in Make-Believe By Stephen Fanning

Once again, author Stephen Fanning has tackled another tough subject with the compassion and finesse that have made him a leading role model for parents everywhere. In the author's latest work, Believe in Make-Believe, Stephen Fanning tackles a subject every parent dreads and knows the time will come for it; the time when our young children's world of make-believe and magic gives way to the functional and factional world of life.

Challenged to defend the delicate actions of a parental expression of love, through the mysterious and elusive remunerative act of the tooth fairy, Fanning courageously explains to his young daughter the reason for the guise of make-believe. In this fast-paced and time-oriented world, a father takes the time and understanding needed to explain, that reality is often fashioned by those who live it.

Center stage and for all to see and learn from, witness a firsthand account of how to explain the magic of Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, and all the other magical entities whom we have revered from times of old for the sake and love of making the world of children just a little better. Stephen Fanning does this in such a way and with great conviction to the feelings and emotions of a child and makes learning the truth, although alarming, a palatable and positive experience.

This simple, but elegant, work is a must-read for all parents and grandparents, in part because to explain the magic of life to a child can be extremely traumatizing, not just for the child, but also for the parental figure. When we as parents learn our children have lost that magical innocence, which we have so painstaking endeared, our world is also injured. Stephen Fanning covers that aspect with just as gracious elegance as he does the enlightenment of the child.

For everyone who has ever had to face this moment and for everyone that ever will, thank you Stephen for being there and for showing us how to do this with conviction and compassion, a rare combination in this day and time.

Gentle, Subtle Words Create An Open Door
Meet the Maker of the Plate

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Who Is CLAY? by Stephen Fanning

Ingeniously unique and alluringly inspiring, Stephen Clay's work Who Is Clay, will transform your ideas about self, sacrifice and faith. Written in one of the best theological genres ever presented, this work mirrors the simplicity of faith itself. In a unique way this books shows the reader how to become a spiritual person, to just surrender to the one and only Maker and you will transform into your shape and path of life. This work is so balanced, straightforward and simplistic in nature that the lesson is almost surreal in its appearance. Written in a style that everyone not only will understand, but will also relate to the human emotions, fears and frustrations that so fill our daily lives.

Who Is CLAY?, delivers a powerful message and one seldom heard in such a quite and practical manner. Reading this delightful piece of literature is almost like speaking softly and lovingly to a small child, telling them about the wonders of life and watching their face light up with excitement and hope. The experience the reader will receive will be like realizing for the first time that there really are wonderful things in life and they are free and accessible. This book is simple, loving, and strong all wrapped up in a surprise package that arrives at your door on Christmas Eve.

Who Is CLAY? by Stephen Fanning may be the nicest thing you buy for yourself, someone you love, or just that special message for a struggling friend whom you care about. This book is excellent for any age group, but will be especially impressionable on the K-12 group. Who is Clay is necessary have for all parochial schools and Sunday schools and will make an excellent addition to any theological library. Easily the best work I have read this year.

Magical Letters and Characters Fly off the Pages
of this Tale and into the Hearts of Everyone

WISCONSIN — A fun and educational adventure in reading ends up being a win-win situation for children, teachers, and parents alike. As colorfully written as it is illustrated, Magic Dragonsoruses, by Kathy Klein and her daughter, Shanna Klein is an exciting and adventurous journey into the world of education. Imaginably conceived and skillfully portrayed, the story takes the reader into a mysterious world of alphabetic characters. The story builds on important values such as fairness, compassion and sharing and at the same time, allows for a magical ride into an imaginary world where an ordinary student can become an extra-ordinary hero.

Marty our student is magically transported into Alpha-land where he must help save the alphabet from being consumed by the evil Cassondra. Along the way, Marty's skills are put to the test as he spells his way across the Alpha-land countryside saving the letters and learning important lessons in the process. Even the neighborhood bully ends up desiring more than anything else, just to be able to learn with the magical letters.

Magic Dragonsoruses is an excellent application of learning in a way that is fun and exciting. In children's literature, these qualities help in retention of skills mastered and further the vocabulary and understanding skills. Teachers will appreciate the positive reinforcement of primary spelling aptitude and parents will love the book’s solid values and morals presented within it.

Most of the drawings were developed by Shanna Klein in her early childhood and this past year her mother, Kathy Klein partnered with Digi-Tall Media to allow us with the assistance of Linda Phillips’ skill with colorization, to bring everything forward with a 2007 look. Digi-Tall feels honored to have worked with this team of strong women with strong skills to bring to a close 2007 with one of the most phenomenal children books in its history.

Magic Dragonsoruses, co-authored by the Klein family along with co-writer and editor, Linda Phillips is a solid children's book with timeless lessons that never go out of style. This book is for all those people who still believe in learning, morals, lessons and just a little magic.

My Unspoken Word
“A twenty-first century poet for a twenty--first century world.”

My Unspoken Word, by Michael Hellwig, renders to the cultured reader a refined look deep into the heart and soul of a classic, yet new, millennial poet. Presenting a unique perspective in an urban setting, Michael Hellwig expresses the emotional paradoxes that so often confound us, in an elegant and insightful flow of lyrical joy and sorrow.
Punctuated with metaphorical wisdom and mystery, My Unspoken Word, provides the individual reader an opportunity to experience each poem without preconceived notions of their meanings. This leaves the interpretation and emotional response open each time his words are read.

Beautifully written with a systematic structure, this lyrical poetic journey takes the readers along on a ride that touches spiritual, political and cultural fantasy and reality. The poems within it are strong but also compassionate. At times there is anger and also spiritual reconciliation to the anger. This cathartic sojourn leaves the audience captured in the heart of every line.

My Unspoken Word by Michael Hellwig, for the connoisseur of fine and often unspoken treasures has been placed in a beautiful, rust colored 94-page hardback. Measuring 7.5 x 7.5, this book sells for $22.22. The unique images placed within this book were photographed by the well-known artist, Jim Bilgere of Dallas and were specifically placed within its pages to bring about even more imagination.

Also, a father, the author is an extremely hard worker in an exciting field… though it cannot be said that he is an amateur writer. He has experience with not only poetry but fiction and non-fiction as well. Currently living in Miami, Florida, he enjoys multiple projects at all times and is fast completing his autobiography for a 2008 copyright date. Michael is proud to say he is one of three children raised by the late, theologian and author, Monika Hellwig.

On February 23, 2007, you can meet him in person at the 11th Annual South Carolina Book Festival being held in the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina. Also on hand will be four separate styles of his one-of-a-kind shirts. Entry Way Marketing and Publishing is extremely pleased and proud to be a part of Michael’s literary creations and new clothing line and have proudly showcased him and his works on www.creationsbymhellwig.com.

Lessons in the Evolution of American Bureaucracy
Rest in Peace-Rural America

“God created man in his image; in the divine image, He created him; male and female. God blessed them saying: be fertile and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all living things that move on the earth.”
Genesis – 1:27-28 Humans acting factually and logically can do so much good.

Rest in Peace-Rural America is Charles Ciancio’s hard-hitting expose’ on the over-governing bureaucracy that is destroying the freedom of one of America’s greatest resources, Rural America.

Ciancio paints a detailed and somewhat gloomy picture of the “Fourth Branch of Government. This fourth branch is comprised of endless agencies and bureaucrats who fiercely enforce overlapping jurisdiction regulating our land, water, and air. Numerous events are cited that leave the reader spellbound as to how these rules, laws, regulations actually work against the good of the American people.

As the agencies grow, so does their bureaucracy creating more licenses, permits, and various other revenue generating penalties against the American People.

Whether you are a weekend camper or a career forester, RIP Rural America will open your eyes and mind to what the future will hold if these powers are not put in check. This book is a must have for all colleges and universities. The future use of American resources is at stake, so join the movement with buying and reading Rest in Peace Rural America Today.

Though the author is not a biologist, hydrologist, watershed specialist, or professional writer; he has worked as a professional Field Forester since 1966 and was born and raised in the rural areas of California. Ciancio’s experiences came from the real world field experiences and his intimate background of living through the creation of the current California Forest Practice. He is a family man and cares deeply about his surroundings and the prospects of our future.

A Vintage Family Experience in the 21st Century

DENVER, CO — Heartfelt warmth and family values still thrive and blossom in the penmanship of noted children’s writer, Elga Haymon White. Rekindle the magic moments that brought you closer to your family with the exemplary style and wholesome traditional family ideas prevalent in A Children’s Christmas Duo.

Once Upon a Christmas and Christmas in the…Land of Elsewhere by Elga Haymon White combines charm and simplicity to provide an overall family enrichment experience. More than a holiday book, A Christmas Duo is an opportunity for Parents and Grandparents to share their time and love with the children most important to them.

Designed as both a story and activity workbook, A Christmas Duo allows for direct interaction between the adult and child. The stories are bright and imaginative and the coloring book area as well as the question and answer segments present a first rate learning experience for adults and children to spend that most precious of all gifts, just being together.

In a time where everything else is faster, bigger, and more efficient, take a step back in time with Elga and remember what the holidays and family are really all about… sharing our love with those most important of all, our children.

Other creations by Elga consist of INTERNET INSIGHTS…A Collection of Writings – Books I, II, and III,’ Heart-to-Heart (five short stories within one book for the young at heart,) and Pure Rhapsody (a book of enrapturing magical poetry.) Instead of publishing her most recent children’s book (now due in 2006,) the author took valuable time out to visit and get to know her fans. She enjoyed success at bookstores and market areas in Colorado such as six Borders Book Stores in six different cities. Elga has enjoyed being able to work with elementary school teachers and students through their studying her books in classrooms, which presented the special togetherness of which she writes so fluently.

Our author loves to share with children and adults alike, her philosophical statement, “An artist paints a picture with paints, canvas, an easel, and a brush; a writer paints a picture with a pen and words alone.”

Ronnie D. Foster stands at the Ridgeview Memorial Park grave of fellow Marine Bill Bryan, who was killed in Vietnam. Six men with McKinney ties who died during Vietnam are buried in Ridgeview. When Mr. Foster finally came home three years later, he learned that a lot had changed about America's attitude toward the war, even in places like McKinney.

An old friend and fellow Marine, Gilbert Garza, stopped by with a bit of advice.

"He met me the day I came home and said, 'Don't talk about the war with anyone,' " Mr. Foster recalled. " 'No one wants to hear about it.' "

So for 35 years, that's exactly what Mr. Foster tried to do. He'd lost one of his closest friends in the war, the guy who'd enlisted with him, who'd joined him on that long train trip to basic training in San Diego.

Three other school friends died there as well. So did the young husband of a girl who lived up the street, who just a month later gave birth to his only child.

"For years, I tried not to even think about it," Mr. Foster said, "but I did, every day.

"And after 35 years, I thought, 'I'm not going to let anyone forget about it, even if I have to jam it down their throats.' "

So Monday, Mr. Foster will be part of a small Memorial Day service at Ridgeview Memorial Park, the final resting place for six of the 16 men with ties to McKinney who died while serving their country during the Vietnam War.

6 from McKinney who didn't come home
It will be the first Memorial Day service at Ridgeview in years, maybe since the war in Vietnam, said Terry Turrentine of Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, which owns the cemetery.

"Back when the war was on, we used to have services here," Ms. Turrentine said. "I can still remember those. I had an old coffee can, and when they had the 21-gun salute, I'd pick up all the shell casings.

"I don't know where that coffee can is now. But it was a very moving experience."

No one intends for this service to compete with the traditional McKinney Memorial Day observance at the historic Pecan Grove Cemetery. It will be low-key, with members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter placing wreaths on the six graves, and a trumpeter, who works for the funeral home, playing taps.

But the service itself has enormous significance, especially to Mr. Foster, the key organizer.

Collin County lost 21 sons in the Vietnam War, he said, including the 16 who had ties to McKinney, a town of about 15,000 people in the mid- to late-'60s. And of the men killed in action during the war, men whose names are etched in The Wall at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., most are buried at Ridgeview. Mr. Foster had a connection to almost every one.

"Three of these guys were good friends of mine," he said, "and I thought it was time we had a little memorial service for these guys."

He grew up down the street from Charles W. "Bill" Bryan. Bill's dad worked at the local cotton mill. So did Mr. Foster's mom. And through high school, they shared a couple of mutual interests – guitars and girls.

During their senior year at McKinney High, they talked about their futures. Mr. Foster, who said he always felt a strong connection with the soldiers in World War II movies, especially after reading Guadalcanal Diary in the seventh grade, said he was going to enlist in the Marines.

"Bill said, 'That sounds good – I think I'll go with you,' " Mr. Foster said. "We wanted to be part of history."

So they enlisted together, took the train to San Diego for basic training and hoped to be assigned to the same unit. That didn't happen, though. Mr. Bryan was sent to the infantry, then to reconnaissance school, while Mr. Foster was assigned to motor transport.

"I saw him once, maybe six months after boot camp, at Camp Pendleton in California," Mr. Foster said. "I saw Bill at the beach club they have at San Onofre and we talked and talked. We tried to get a beer, but we were only 18, so we couldn't."

Soon after, both men were sent to Vietnam.

Cpl. Bryan led a seven-man recon team near Khe Sanh that was sent in to gauge the strength and monitor the movements of North Vietnamese Army units.

On Jan. 20, 1968, a North Vietnamese battalion overran the team. Cpl. Bryan was killed trying to save two of his men.

"I was in Okinawa at the time when I got a letter from my mom," Mr. Foster said. "Inside was the clipping from the newspaper about Bill. It came about two weeks after he had been buried."

Two others of the six buried at Ridgeview were school friends as well. Darrel "George" Mahan, who had gone through junior high with Mr. Foster, dropped out at 17 and enlisted in the Marines. Thomas Holdbrooks graduated from McKinney High in 1967 and joined the Marines, too.

Mr. Foster didn't know the others buried at Ridgeview – Army Spc. 4 Martin LeRoy Rodgers, Air Force Capt. Richard Ryan or Army Spc. 4 Vernon Wayne Woody – though he did know Mr. Woody's wife, who grew up down the street.

But their shared service creates a bond that won't be broken, Mr. Foster said.

Now he hopes the rest of the country, even those who opposed the war, can understand why these men willingly put themselves in danger half a world from home.

"I think things are finally beginning to turn around," Mr. Foster said. "Even the people who didn't go, now they want to know what it was like.

"I get a lot of e-mails now from old classmates who say things like, 'It's time to thank you guys for what you did.' Right or wrong, our intent was noble," he said.

"We thought, 'There's this little country over there and the big guys are trying to go in there and take over.' I can't speak for everyone, only the Marines I knew, but we were trying to help people live free lives."

Mr. Foster knows his way from grave to grave at Ridgeview. Some days, something inside pulls him that way and he drives down to the cemetery and spends some time with his old pals.

A few days ago, he wandered beneath a gun-metal sky, traffic humming past on U.S. 75, and paused by each gravestone.

"I feel like I'm among my brothers there. There is a brotherhood especially among Marines – once a Marine, always a Marine. And I really feel that brotherhood with guys who gave their lives."

Maybe he pauses a little longer by Bill Bryan's headstone – close friends then, and close friends now.

"Bill was just a great guy," he said. "I don't think anyone didn't like Bill."

So when Mr. Foster's own son was born, he paid his old friend the ultimate honor a man can bestow.

He named his son Bill Bryan Foster.

Book Review
One Day As A Lion

I'm not normally one for book reviews, so the fact that I'm sitting down to write about this book should speak volumes, no pun intended.

The tome in question is "One Day As A Lion." It's a local work, written by a McKinney resident about local boys. But these subjects of the book form part of a tragic sphere. The 21 subjects, who each command a chapter, were all young men from Collin County who died serving their country in the Vietnam War.

That was the hook for me. I did a story on the author, R.D. Foster, for a Veterans Day story weeks ago. I didn't have to read this book, I wasn't expected to, but my desire to learn more about this chapter in America's history overwhelmed me. The truth is, I cracked open this book knowing little about the war. Perhaps this is an indictment of our education system, but I had never studied the Vietnam War, not in high school, not in college. We spent weeks learning about England in the 1500s, but not a single minute about one of the most tumultuous periods in this nation's history.

So it was that I had a deeper mission in mind than just finding out about local heroes when I opened "One Day As A Lion." Foster snagged me in the first chapter. Ronnie Foster served in Vietnam, and it's obvious early on that there was a greater sense of purpose guiding his fingers across the keyboard in the creation of this work. A former marine, Foster knows what he's talking about, and it's that inside knowledge that really helps move this book along. When Foster talks about life in the rice paddies, it's obvious he knows what he's talking about.

But the Collin County men who lost their lives in country are at the heart of "One Day As A Lion." Young men like Royce Glenn Scoggins and Charles W. "Bill" Bryan left their homes and family in McKinney to willingly serve their country and never came home. Foster's purpose in allowing us to get to know these young men is to bring the war home and make it more real.

One word of caution here: "One Day As A Lion" is an unflinching look at war. It gets up close and personal and pulls no punches. If you're looking for a candy-coated collection of obituaries, look elsewhere.

Nearly every chapter deals with the life and death of local soldiers. Their time in Vietnam is chronicled, as is the way each of them died. At times, "One Day As A Lion" is a hard read simply because the reader gets to know these young men as more than names at the beginning of a chapter, yet their fate is already cast. "One Day As A Lion" is an emotional roller coaster, but it is a must-read for anyone living in or around McKinney or anyone wanting to know more about what happened half a world away little more than 30 years ago. Well-written and factual without being overly so, "One Day As A Lion" is an entertaining and intriguing read.

Foster's work is a respectful tribute to the local boys who lost their lives in Vietnam and, as such, worthy of your consideration.

Oh, and what of the title? It comes from an old Tibetan proverb: "It is better to live one day as a lion than ten thousand years as a sheep." Fitting.

The Unsung Lyrics
of the Fallen Heroes of
Viet Nam
One Day as a Lion

Collin County, Texas – In 1776, the men of this land formed together to fight for freedom and independence from the British Empire. One hundred years later the descendants of these men fought another revolution to maintain that freedom. Almost two hundred years after that, their descendants were called upon to defend the freedom of this land in America’s longest war to date.

One Day as a Lion is a gut-wrenching reminder of the war and social revolution of the 1960’s. This was a time when patriotism was not always the norm and when soldiers and heroes were often treated shamefully by their own people.

R.D. Foster takes a unique look at the brave and often unsung heroes of Collin County, Texas. Most were little more than boys, but were transformed into men through extraordinary circumstances and volatile situations. These are the stories of those who did not return and how and why they died. The intense action of the firefights and attacks include well-documented information on positions, weapons, and units involved, both friendly and hostile.

The author, R.D. Foster, a veteran of the Vietnam War himself, portrays each of the fallen hero’s stories with a finesse and dignity that is sure to earn the respect of both the academic and military readers. Not only are there interviews with soldiers, sailors, and Marines who fought side-by-side with some of these young men, but also included are copies of letters written home, bad-news telegrams, and newspaper accounts of the actions fought and the deaths suffered that would forever change America.

One Day as a Lion is a graphic and powerful reminder about who we are and how we lived and died. This is a must-have account for all academic instructors and military students, much less the families, friends, and loved-ones of service men of today. The lessons learned are why many of our gallant Vietnam Veterans could never really come home.

Still living in the area, the author is experiencing success as a writer and is Editor-in-Chief of Digi-Tall Media and Entry Way Marketing and Publishing. His first novel, Last Train Runnin was published in 2005 by PublishAmerica and is a story that takes place in the mid-to-late 1960’s when America was in great turmoil. The story follows the lives of two young men as they try to cope with their own separate, but parallel worlds encompassing music and war.
